Cat in the Hat - A Brief History

Children's book author and illustrator Dr. Seuss, was born Theodor Geisel in Springfield, Massachusetts, 2 March 1904.

In May of 1954, Life published a report on illiteracy among schoolchildren, suggesting that children were having trouble reading because their books were boring.

This problem inspired Geisel's publisher, prompting him to send Geisel a list of 400 words he felt were important for children to learn. The publisher asked Geisel to cut the list to 250 words and use them to write an entertaining children's book.

Nine months later, Geisel, using 220 of the words given to him, published The Cat in the Hat, which brought instant success.

At the time of his death on September 24, 1991, Ted had written and illustrated 44 children's books. His books had been translated into more than 15 languages. Over 200 million copies had found their way into homes and hearts around the world.

His honors included two Academy awards, two Emmy awards, a Peabody award and the Pulitzer Prize.

The Cat and the Hat (1957), is a story about two children who find themselves home alone with a roguish, hat-wearing feline who is a study in bad behavior.

With only 223 vocabulary words and much repetition, it was ideally suited for beginning readers

Told with simple rhymes and rhythms, The Cat in the Hat is a jaunty illustrated tale that encourages very young readers to read more.

Cat in the Hat Movie and More...

Besides the books, his works have provided the source for eleven children's television specials, a Broadway musical and a feature-length motion picture. Other major motion pictures are on the way.
